Robot
2004. Written, Directed & Animated by Jessica Plummer Running time - 2:20 sec.
I had made Robot for my first animation course at Pratt. What really astonished me was that I had a week to complete the project and I actually pulled off all that work. Mind you, I only added the titles on later, and have recently spent a good few days trying to color-correct the old footage (which is a lesson for me and all of you: take better care of your projects! Don't get lazy like I did and abuse the heck out of an old VHS tape). I managed to clean up the old video quite a bit but there's still a little bit of a flutter. Though any more tweaking and I'm afraid I'd ruin it.
All the animation is cut-outs and props on background layers, animated under the camera. I even constructed a shoddy-type multiplane stage for animating layers, made out of plexiglass. Worked really well actually. I made three different versions of the robot character, one looking left and one right, and one from behind, all out of bristol board and twist-tie (for the fingers and neck), with the joints pieced together by thread. That gives a pretty good impression how small he was (I was animating the eyes with tweezers!).
Music is by the talented Kevin MacLeod at incompetech.com.
